Haptic, Technology + Keramik Lab
Haptek Lab is a design-research group that utilizes industrial robotic arms to explore industrial manufacturing of architectural ceramics beyond the surface. In so doing, we reject the disconnect between digital fabrication and the haptic qualities of material behaviour. Developing digital materiality based on tactile robotic feedback, we combine the digital (im)precision of robotic fabrication in clay with the haptic qualities of the handmade rooted in the craft tradition.
Join us on a virtual reality lab tour and exhibition of "Beyond the Surface: The Behaviour of Digital Ceramics" as part of DesignTO 2021 and the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop (ACAW) 2020.
Use your browser above to virtually explore our design-research at Ryerson Creative Technology Lab at the Faculty of Communication & Design (Toronto, ON) and the Syracuse College of Visual and Performing Arts Ceramic Studios (Syracuse, NY). In conjunction with the ‘Beyond the Surface’ exhibition, there will be an online Symposium on Saturday January 30, from 1-2pm, featuring a presentation by Haptek Lab and a panel discussion.
DesignTO’s all-things-design festival in Toronto is back. Things are a little different this year but the schedule is still packed with a ton of opportunity to learn something new and expand your horizons

Ryerson Univesity's Creative Technology Lab at the Faculty of Communication & Design is an advanced technology-based workshop that supports creative research, specialized curriculum, and entrepreneurship activities across all nine FCAD Schools and Ryerson Zones. Creative Technology Lab looks to disrupt and revolutionize the use of technology within the creative fields by leveraging digital fabrication, 3D printing, textile computing, AR/VR, and robotics.
ACAW is a hands-on research and development workshop for architects and facade engineers to explore the use of terra cotta in high-performance facade design. Representatives of industry and academia from around the world gather virtually from August 12 - 13, 2020 for the fifth annual Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop, presented by Boston Valley Terra Cotta and the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning and supported by the UB Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies (SMART).
Beyond the Surface: The Behaviour of Digital Ceramics was made possible through funding support from: Ryerson University (RU) FCAD Seed Grant, RU URO program, RU Career Boost program, Syracuse University (SU) grant, as well as in-kind donations from Ryerson University Creative Technology Lab at FCAD, Boston Valley Terracotta, Corning Museum of Glass, Ryerson School of Interior Design 3D Material Studio and Ceramic Lab, Ryerson University Library Collaboratory, and Syracuse University Ceramic Department.
